Good news: tomorrow is Friday and National Donut Day, that means… free donuts! It doesn’t get better than this, folks.

National Donut Day goes back to the 1930s when the Salvation Army started using donuts as a fundraiser and mood booster for people during the Great Depression and for soldiers during the wars. This is the 100th anniversary of the first Donut Lassies (the ladies who made the donuts) and you should treat it like a party!

As such, your first stop should be at the Salvation Army and grab a donut. While you’re there, they’re encouraging you to post a selfie with the hashtag #GivingisSweet. Don’t get any glaze on your phone.

Three major donut shops are joining in on the fun: at Dunkin’ Donuts get a free classic donut with the purchase of any beverage; at Krispy Kreme ANY one donut is free, no purchase required; and at Tim Hortons buy a coffee and you’ll get a free donut.

We’re sure plenty of local shops are celebrating too, so make sure to swing by your fave donut establishment. We’ve heard Duck Donuts, Fractured Prune Doughnuts, and local grocery stores all have specials.

Here in NYC, swing by Doughnut Plant for a free Carnival Sprinkles mini cake doughnut with any purchase or Dough Doughnuts for special flavors. Enjoy!
