In recent months, Donald Trump has made offensive comments against the Mexican culture, but even he, like most, can’t resist some good grub when offered to him.
Trump appeared on Geraldo Rivera’s radio show, WABC New York, where the two discussed the recent issue and Trump’s image in the media. Rivera explained that he thought news outlets had “demonized” Trump’s character, and that to repair the damage, the two should go to a Mexican restaurant to meet the people who work there.
“Go say hi to the staff, talk with some of the folks, just ordinary, regular normal folks,” Rivera said. “Tell them how you really feel. Let them see how you really are.” When asked directly if he’d dine in a Mexican restaurant, Trump replied, “I don’t mind, I’d do that in two seconds.” Rivera continued, “We’ll have some rice and beans. You’ll meet some of my relatives. These are nice, law-abiding people.”
The Washington Examiner reported that in an email to their media desk, Rivera said he hoped the dinner would actually happen. “I’m totally serious. He’s my friend and I want the Latino community to see the real person and not the caricature.”
Though the Mexican community will never completely forgive Trump’s offensive comments, his effort may be the first gesture needed to repair the damage already done. Until then, we’ll leave Rivera and Trump with some suggestions for where to dine on some of the best Mexican comida around.
