You may have noticed a sadness in abuela’s kitchen, or at your local bodega. The reason? Avocados.
The acclaimed Latin fruit has recently experienced a shortage, resulting in a high price tag that isn’t sitting so well with avo-lovers. Forbes reports that the shortage is happening due to a strike in Mexico. Avocado producers south of the border have been petitioning for higher pay. Mexico, along with California, is one of the largest growers of avocados.
Over the past few weeks, both restaurants and home kitchens have taken a hit. Those who simply can’t live without them, though, are paying a hefty price. Some reports show a $5 price tag per avocado, and buying in bulk is no better. Chain restaurants, such as Chipotle, who’s menu is dependent on the ingredient, are paying as much as $80 per case. Other reports show that some restaurants are left to opt for an avocado-free menu.
Despite the current shortage, things should improve in the weeks to come. Stephanie Blanton, VP of procurement for Produce Alliance explains, “Prices are still higher…but it has improved and will continue to do so every week.”
We sure hope so, for our sake and for the sake of Latinos everywhere.
