    3
large cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
    1/8
    teaspoon
    pepper
    1/4
    teaspoon
    cumin
    4
    teaspoons
    chicken bouillon powder
    1/4
    cup
    firmly packed brown sugar
    1

    cups
    apple juice
    1
    teaspoon
    apple cider vinegar
    1/2
    teaspoon
    liquid smoke
    1
29-ounce can pumpkin puree or 3 cups butternut squash puree
    Directions
Cook bacon and onion in a large pot over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Scrape bottom of pan to loosen bacon bits. Reduce heat to medium.
Add apples, pepper, and cumin; cover and cook for 5 minutes more, until onion begins to turn translucent and apples soften.
Add bouillon, brown sugar, water, apple juice, vinegar, and liquid smoke. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes to finish cooking the apples.
Stir in pumpkin, bring to a simmer again, and let cook for 5 minutes or longer while flavors meld. Serve hot.
