The best way to binge watch the new season of Orange is the New Black (which dropped today on NetFlix), is by eating prison food… right? If you agree, get to Singapore where a restaurant has been transformed into the Litchfield Penitentiary Cafeteria and is serving up gourmet versions of the shows dishes, prison style.
The restaurant is serving up a three-course prison inspired menu (complete with plastic food trays and a drink list that is limited to water) that includes: a corn appetizer (dressed up with jalapeno, cheese, and lime); a mushroom, cheddar, quinoa, and pumpkin play on Nutraloaf (a rice or oatmeal based dish usually served to misbehaving prisoners); and gruel for dessert (actually white chocolate coconut pudding with almond crumble).
Don’t get us wrong, we’re OITNB fans, really. But doesn’t this sound depressing? And kind of gross? Dressed up Nutraloaf still reminds us of Nutraloaf. And we wouldn’t wish that on anybody.
While we’re all for the trend of bringing our favorite fictional hot spots into real life (reserve us a seat on the couch at Central Perk), we think we’ll pass on prison food. We’d much rather focus on happier times and foods: like grabbing a booth at Saved by the Bell’s Saved by the Max diner in Chicago; drinking up a magical elixir at the Harry Potter themed bar in Toronto; or settling in for a beer at the George Costanza themed bar (of Seinfeld fame) in Australia.
Better yet, we’ll line up right now for what we hope will be the next tv-inspired pop up: Luke’s Diner (we can’t wait for Gilmore Girls!).
In the meantime, we’ll binge watch OITNB with Thai food and some bottles of wine. We’ll be back in approximaely 14 hours. Shh.
