Burger King hijacks Google for new Whopper ad.
Fast food brands have finally figured out how to make their food appeal to all: Simply force customers to listen to the details and ingredients of their most popular menu items. Eh.
Burger King released a new 15-second advertisement which seemingly hijacked Google’s voice-activated home device. In the commercial, a BK employee is standing behind the counter explaining that 15 seconds is, of course, not enough time to list every ingredient on the mondo-burger, so instead, the employee says “OK Google, what is the Whopper burger?” If you know anything about Google’s device (or similarly, the Amazon Echo), you know that yelling out any quesiton or command elicits a response from the ingenius little thing. Thus, homes with such devices were greeted with BK’s words and were prompted to read a full Wikipedia description of the burger.
As expected, Google wasn’t involved in the campaign, and quickly disabled its ability to trigger home gadgets. Frankly, we’d only be on board with a commercial such as this if it said “Order tacos, STAT!”
