One tequila, two tequila, three tequila… New car!
Technically, that’s not how the saying goes, but Ford Motor Company and Jose Cuervo have teamed up for an unlikely partnership that’s making this saying almost true. The two companies have developed a plan to create new automotive parts from agave plants.
According to a press release issued this morning, Ford will take byproduct from the plants and use it to create a “sustainable bioplastic material to incorporate in vehicles.” More specifically, durable fibers will be extracted from the agave plant and made into durable products. Prior to developing this plan, Jose Cuervo used a portion of the remaining fibers as compost for its farms and for other environmentally-friendly uses.
The bioplastic is currently being tested for “durability” and “aesthetic qualities.” If all goes well, this sustainable creation could significantly reduce vehicle weight and improve energy consumption in Ford’s cars.
Cheers to tequila’s superhuman powers.
