Look, it’s the holidays. That means cocktail party followed by holiday party followed by brunch and what you really need is a hangover cure.. which we present without judgement. We’ve all been there, the spirits were flowing and somewhere between the third and fourth (or was it fourth or fifth) cocktail, you lost track of, well, everything.
First, a disclaimer. There is no magical hangover cure. Sorry. What you feel as a hangover is your body battling to break down and expel toxins and restocking your body with everything it lost: fluid, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. So the only that that will truly help (besides going back in time to stop yourself from drinking too much in the first place) is fueling your body with what it needs; here’s how. [pagebreak]
What to Drink
Water
Yeah, really. Alcohol is dehydrating and when your body doesn’t have enough water, it will pull from all other places to get what it needs. So drink up to help that headache dissipate.
Coconut Water
True story: coconut water has five of the electrolytes found in the human body. So grab a box or bottle to help restore the liquid and electrolytes you lost.
Ginger Tea
Ginger tea works twofold: you get water and it will help settle an upset tummy and help with nausea.
Coffee
This is a tricky one. Coffee is a mild diuretic but if it’s part of your morning routine, keep it. The water will help rehydrate you and the caffeine will give you a boost of energy. Just take it easy and make sure to have a ton of water and lay off sugary syrups or flavorings. [pagebreak]
What to Eat
Greasy Foods
This one makes us sad because we do love our fries but… greasy food won’t actually help with a hangover. That’s because fried foods can irritate (an already sensitive) stomach. But that burger could help before you go out, by preventing alcohol from being absorbed in the first place.
Eggs
Go ahead and grab some brunch, eggs will help! Eggs are packed with amino acids that help the liver work better, that means less headaches (just trust us on that complicated science).
Green Smoothie
You need some potassium, an important electrolyte that helps your body keep a normal fluid balance. That’s in bananas and leafy greens. So mix it up with some yogurt to get your morning after going.
Salty Soup
We know, this does not sound appetizing. But trust us, it will make you feel better. Grab a cup or bowl of chicken or miso soup. Both will help control the sodium and water levels in your body and restore order.
