After struggling through a year of scandal and a tragic food safety outbreak, fast casual chain Chipotle is ready to make some changes, including upping its prices, reports Eater.
Speaking at a conference for investors, Chipotle CEO Steve Ellis told invitees that 2016 had been Chipotle’s most challenging year to date and in order to recover the chain will be working to change its image and recoup lost profits.
The strategy seems to focus on two things: ads and prices.
On the ad forefront, you can expect to see more burrito commercials and banner ads and a push toward online and mobile ordering. Thumbs up to the latter, as we’re all about anything that will get us burritos faster.
As for the prices, thumbs down, obvs. Due to a rise in the average minimum wage, Chipotle will begin to test price increases in some markets (so don’t be surprised if your burrito with extra guac is more expensive in a new city).
And more bad news: no more free burritos.
That’s right. Even though Chipotle relied on luring in customers with the promise of free food, the company said that “heavy promo spending has run its course.”
So start saving up now, there won’t be any more freebies and your fave menu items might cost even more.
