Taco Bell to Provide Healthier Meals by 2020

Mexican fast food giant Taco Bell is furthering their commitment to better nutrition by promising healthier meals on their menus by 2020.

After the success of their Cantina Bell menu, spearheaded by Chef Lorena Garcia, and looking to target the US’s growing obesity problem, Taco Bell has just announced that they are working on a new nutrition plan that will have 20% of combo meals meet one-third of the federal government’s recommended dietary guidelines.

Soon you will be able to get a main item, side dish and beverage combination with less calories and less sodium, according to Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed. He says that new products are being developed which will not only taste great but will also include the chain’s new nutritional goals. "Our customer tastes and needs are evolving. They want more balanced options."

According to a report from USA Today, Taco Bell is hoping to test a range of new, better-for-you products later this year, and even begin launching some in 2014. They’re also promising to balance the healthier eating options more by better promoting its Fresco menu, which allows customers to substitute pico de gallo instead of sauces and cheeses.

With Taco Bell expanding their commitment to healthy choices, even as they also launch the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, we wonder if their customers will truly believe in this turn-around? It looks like we will have to wait until 2020 to find out.
