We see a lot of food holidays around these parts but today is extra special. It’s National Doughnut Day, a food holiday with history!

National Doughnut Day is celebrated the first Friday in June and it actually has roots in World War I. Back in the late 1930s, the Salvation Army started the day as a fundraiser to help those struggling through the Great Depression and to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I, volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Though it sounds like fluff, in 1917 the Salvation Army sent a team to France who found that soldiers were in need of a little TLC and canteens or social centers, called “huts”, could help alleviate some of the stress. The huts were originally meant to sell baked goods but because of the difficulties of baking in abandoned buildings, one volunteer had the brilliant idea of serving doughnuts. The rest is history.

So today, celebrate by frying up two of our favorite happy-hour inspired treats: Bluerry Rum Glazed Donuts and Cinnamon Tequila Glazed Donuts. And maybe donate to a worthy cause too.
