James Beard: America’s First Foodie is part of PBS’ Emmy-award winning series American Masters, which spotlights people at the top of their game. This film will premiere as a “chefs flight” of four documentaries on culinary legends. The other three chefs are Alice Waters, Julia Childs, and Jacques Pepin.
America’s First Foodie, co-produced by former TLK contributor Kathleen Squires, takes a look at the man behind the Beard institution. You know, the one that issues all the awards? He was also known for his advocacy; he endorsed the use of local and sustainable ingredients and championed American chefs when the rest of the world wanted only French food.
Beard was also the first chef TV host, teaching men and women how to cook via broadcast and thereby opening the door to the food TV revolution we know and love today.
The film had its red carpet on April 23 at Tuck Manhattan. In attendance were Ted Allen, Marc Murphy, Jonathan Waxman, and Sherry Yard. The Tuck also created a few cocktails based on famous Beard quotes, and will be serving them all week at the Lobster Side Car, 12th Street Punch and the TUCK Manhattan.
