A recent investigation made by CBC News Marketplace revealed that the oven roasted chicken used for Subway sandwiches is only 57 percent real chicken. What’s the rest? Soy.
The test that yielded these alarming results was conducted at Trent University Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory. It explains that when chicken is processed, seasoned, and steeped in marinade, its real chicken DNA decreases.
Not all of Subway’s competitor food chains fared so low: McDonald’s Country Chicken scored 85 percent; Tim Horton’s Chipotle Chicken Grilled Wrap scored 87 percent; and Wendy’s Grilled Chicken sandwich scored 89 percent.

Marketplace reached out to Subway looking for answers. Subway Canada responded that it couldn’t confirm the veracity of the results: “All our chicken items are made from 100 percent white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled,” said a spokesperson, adding “We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”
