Venezuelan natives must be dreaming of pabellón criollo and a mountain of abuela’s arepas.

The country is currently in a food shortage crisis that’s leaving thousands without basic ingredients. The country’s entire economic system is in turmoil, resulting in a 700% inflation rate on products. Thus, prices on ingredients such as flour have skyrocketed and become impossible for most to purchase. Reports have shown that people have gone so far as to “hunt dogs and cats in the street” for sustenance.

Venezuelans aren’t ones to keep hush-hush, though. Many have taken to social media to express their hunger and disgust towards the government by posting photos of their empty refrigerators, using the hashtag #NeverasVaciasEnVenezuela (literally translated, “the empty fridges of Venezuela”).

Munchies notes that the food scarcity issue has gotten so bad that one meal now costs as much as three did prior to the inflation increase. Though the country has countless issues to work through, providing food is a bare minimum human right – and without it, few people will be left in the country to fight for every other right he or she deserves.
