It seems the glam life of a restaurant chef may not be so glam after all. If you’ve ever wanted to join the crew at your favorite restaurant, grilling up the perfect steak or yelling out orders, you may want to reevaluate your life goals.

Our good friends at Eater picked up this listicle, ominously titled “50 Things They Never Told You About Being a Chef,” originally written and posted on the Canadian pastry chef blog, Wake Up and Smell the Cake.

As promised, the list spells out, in disheartening detail, all the cons you’ve never thought about when dreaming of joining the line. From the physical, “you’ll almost always have open wounds on your hands and arms”; to the psychological, “you will lose your social skills”; to the financial, “you’ll earn a pittance for years or decades”; to the downright sad, “you will never be congratulated on your work”; the list isn’t for the faint of heart.

However, if you have the fortitude to read all the way to the end, you’ll be rewarded. Because the truth is, “if you’re the right type of person… you will fall in love with your job and never look back.”

Here’s hoping.
