Amazonian super fruit açai has been gaining popularity around the country in recent years (in case you haven't noticed). The bright reddish-purple berries are chock-full of nutrients, believed to slow aging and maybe even help with weight loss. And they're everywhere: in smoothies, bowls, and even cocktails. So where can Austinites go to get their fix? Read on to find out.
This quirky soup and juice shop started out as a one-man operation offering weekly soup deliveries made by bicycle. As the business grew, they opened a brick-and-mortar (or three) and added in juices and smoothies, including the Voltron, an “upper echelon” smoothie of açai, almond, cacao, coconut oil, banana, and rice milk.
Check out Wheatsville for Sambazon açai products, including juices, energy drinks, and frozen puréed fruit for making your own smoothies or bowls. Our favorite of their açai products is the organic, dairy-free açai sorbet, which comes in original, açai and coconut, and açai chocolate with chocolate chips.
Have the acai come to you! This small business sells pasta, oils and spices in the Austin area by appointment. Try their açai berry balsamic vinaigrette on a fruit-based salad, such as apple walnut or cranberry and goat cheese — or the company even recommends using the vinaigrette in a green tea, blueberry, and banana smoothie!
This locally owned juice and smoothie shop has a variety of açai bowls that tend toward the hearty. For instance, there’s the Nutter Butter, a blend of açai, banana, apple juice and cinnamon, topped with granola, crispy rice, coconut, almonds, peanut butter, hemp seeds and more. You won’t need lunch after one of those babies!
If you’re out on West Sixth, stop by J. Black’s for their açai sangria, which is practically a fruit salad in a cocktail. It’s made with Veev açai spirit, St. Germain, champagne, orange juice, and berries. Light and refreshing, this drink is perfect for a warm day.
This yoga studio–adjacent snack bar is more than just a smoothie shop. They’re known for their açai bowls, a thick blend of fruit and juice topped with sliced fruit, granola, coconut and more, so big and filling that they’re practically a meal. We recommend The Green Bowl, which blends açai with avocado, spinach, bananas, vanilla, and almond milk.
