Is there anything more summery than fresh coconut? No, no there is not. But cracking open paradise can seem a little daunting. While these bowling-ball-resembling nuts have one tough shell, getting at that tasty meat is easier than you think. Allow us to guide you with these simple steps!
Step 1 – Gather your tools
Before you begin, you’ll need some household tools at hand. Snatch up a screwdriver to puncture the “eyes” for milking, a bowl to capture the milk, a hammer for breaking the nut open, and a blunt knife to score the coconut and scrape out the meat.
Step 2 – Milk you coconut
Place your screwdriver into one of the coconut’s “eyes” and hammer it in firmly. Once you have punctured the shell, turn the coconut over into a bowl to capture the sweet nectar. Save for later or drink at will!
Step 3 - Make your mark
Oftentimes when you purchase a coconut from the store, it will be scored for you down its “equator". This marks where you’ll strike the coconut with the hammer. If there is no scoring, use a blunt knife to carve out a line around the nuts middle. (We recommend the “unscored” variety as these are less likely to be spoiled.)
Step 5 – STRIKE!
Hold the coconut firmly in your hand as you strike the along its equator. Rotate the nut while striking (making sure to keep your fingers safe!) and the nut should split in two after a few good hits.
Step 6 – Remove the Flesh and ENJOY!
To remove the flesh, use a knife to score triangular (or whatever figure you see fit) shapes out of the meat, then pop them out one-by-one. Now go ahead and pop them right into you mouth…or into your next piña colada!
